The City of Eldora’s was the first town platted in Hardin County in 1853. The City grew largely on its rich farm land affording the construction of many of the commercial buildings you see today. In 1892 Hardin County began construction of the now historic Hardin County Court House. Architect T.D. Allen designed the building in a Victorian Romanesque style and it cost $48,000 to construct.  In today’s money that would equal nearly $1,000,000.

The Court House stands as a monument to the wealth and history of Eldora and Hardin County and in May of 2009 the remaining downtown joined the Court House as a registered historical site covering 10 blocks and 66 buildings. In August 2009 a major hail storm ripped through the community beginning a rebirth of the downtown through repair, reinvestment and a new streetscape project.
